The Institut fuer Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University has the unique feature to cover the full textile process chain. Technology fields from raw material to component will be explored depending on the application. Currently, the institute employs an academic staff with 108 workers and a service staff with 65 workers, as well as 205 student assistants. Within the facilities there are 170 machines starting from a simple sewing machine up to a 15 meters long industrial warp-knitting machine. 95 percent of the annual turnover is third party funded. A special focus of the institute is the interdisciplinary collaboration with other faculties. Within the composites division Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) was developed (Sonderforschungsbereich 532) which obtained outstanding results for use of textiles in civil engineering. There is also a collaboration between ITA and the biological and medical faculties which leads to new fields in medical textiles and biomaterials. In March 2011 Prof. Stefan Jockenhoevel received the Professorship in “Tissue Engineering & Textile Implants” which is based at the Institut fuer Textiltechnik.
